Enhanced manufacturer system warranties — tier ladder by manufacturer
Each major shingle manufacturer offers a tiered warranty ladder above the standard limited warranty — GAF runs Standard / System Plus / Silver Pledge / Golden Pledge, Owens Corning runs Standard / Preferred Protection / System Protection / Platinum Protection, and CertainTeed runs Standard / Integrity Roof System / SureStart PLUS. Enhanced tiers extend coverage materially but require certified-contractor installation of qualifying full-system components from the same manufacturer.
The standard limited material warranty is the floor. Above it, each major manufacturer offers progressively richer warranties that bundle longer non-prorated periods, workmanship coverage backed by the manufacturer (not just the contractor), and transferability terms. The GAF ladder runs Standard Limited (default) → System Plus (GAF Certified contractor plus select GAF accessories) → Silver Pledge (GAF Certified Plus contractor plus qualifying accessories) → Golden Pledge (GAF Master Elite contractor plus GAF Lifetime Shingles plus a qualifying package of GAF accessory products, with an extended non-prorated material coverage period, workmanship coverage backed directly by GAF, and one-time transferability). The Owens Corning ladder runs Standard → Preferred Protection (OC Preferred contractor plus qualifying components) → System Protection → Platinum Protection (Platinum Preferred contractor, invitation-only, with both materials and workmanship coverage backed by Owens Corning). The CertainTeed ladder runs Standard → Integrity Roof System (CertainTeed Credentialed installer plus qualifying components) → SureStart PLUS (SELECT ShingleMaster contractor with Master Shingle Applicator-certified crew, with workmanship coverage backed by CertainTeed). The pattern is consistent across manufacturers: enhanced coverage requires (a) a contractor certified at a high enough tier with that specific manufacturer, (b) installation of a qualifying full-system component package from the same brand (shingles, ridge cap, starter strip, underlayment, leak barrier, ventilation), and (c) registration of the warranty with the manufacturer within the required post-install window. The contractor-backing distinction matters most when the contractor goes out of business — a workmanship issue covered by a manufacturer-backed enhanced warranty remains valid because the manufacturer underwrites it. Standard contractor labor warranties evaporate if the business closes. Enhanced warranty terms evolve, so homeowners typically confirm current composition requirements directly with the manufacturer rather than rely on contractor sales materials, and request the warranty document in writing before signing the roofing contract.
