NRCA PROCertification — individual installer credential, manufacturer-neutral
NRCA PROCertification is the National Roofing Contractors Association's credential program for individual roof-system installers — not businesses. It's manufacturer-neutral, requires 18 or more months of hands-on experience (depending on the system type), and involves both a written eligibility exam and a hands-on performance exam. Renewal every 3 years.
NRCA PROCertification is distinct from most other roofing credentials in two ways. First, it certifies individual installers rather than businesses — an installer takes the credential with them across jobs. Second, it is manufacturer-neutral: unlike GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, or CertainTeed SELECT, NRCA PROCertification doesn't depend on what brand of shingles the installer uses. NRCA offers separate tracks for each roof system type: thermoplastic, EPDM, modified bitumen, clay and concrete tile, metal panel, natural slate, and others. Eligibility requires hands-on installation experience on the specific system — 18 months for asphalt shingle systems, with longer experience periods for more technical lower-slope and specialty systems like thermoplastics, natural slate, and metal panels — and most of that experience within the past 12 months. Applicants must pass a written eligibility exam and a hands-on performance exam demonstrating system-specific installation skills and safety compliance. Certification renewal is required every three years. For a homeowner asking "who will actually be on my roof," NRCA PROCertification is a relatively unique credential because it names individual installer competency rather than company business standing.
