GAF contractor certification tiers — Certified vs Master vs Master Elite
GAF has three contractor certification tiers: Certified (entry), Master or Preferred (mid-tier), and Master Elite (top ~2%). Each tier unlocks different warranty options — only Master Elite can offer the Golden Pledge. The distinction matters because some contractors advertise "GAF Certified" without specifying which tier, which can obscure the warranty ceiling.
GAF's contractor program has three tiers. GAF Certified is the entry level — contractors have completed GAF training and meet basic requirements for licensing and insurance. They can offer the System Plus Limited Warranty, which covers materials plus workmanship for a limited period. GAF Master (sometimes called Preferred) is the mid-tier — contractors have demonstrated deeper commitment to training, customer satisfaction, and business practices. They can also offer the System Plus warranty. GAF Master Elite is the top tier, held by approximately the top 2% of North American roofers. Master Elite is the only tier that unlocks the Golden Pledge warranty: an extended non-prorated materials coverage period, workmanship coverage factory-backed by GAF, transferable once. The practical consequence: when a contractor advertises they are "GAF Certified" without specifying the tier, the warranty ceiling is the System Plus, not the Golden Pledge. Homeowners who care about the enhanced warranty typically ask which tier the contractor holds and request the warranty document in writing before signing the roofing contract. Master Elite status can be revoked by GAF if ongoing standards slip. Current certification status is visible on gaf.com's contractor locator, so homeowners often verify there directly rather than rely on marketing materials.
