GAF residential shingle lines — Timberline HDZ (flagship), two Class-4 routes (AS II SBS + UHDZ/UltraMat fiberglass), Grand Sequoia (designer)
GAF's residential line runs Timberline HDZ (the flagship architectural — LayerLock wider nailing zone, StainGuard Plus algae, 130 mph wind, and NOT Class 4) and TWO distinct UL 2218 Class 4 impact-resistant Timberline routes: Timberline AS II (Class 4 via SBS / "rubberized" polymer-modified asphalt) and Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat (Class 4 via a heavier reinforced fiberglass mat). Grand Sequoia is the wood-shake designer line (with a Class 4 "AS" variant). The enhanced Golden Pledge warranty requires a GAF Master Elite certified installer.
GAF's residential asphalt line sorts into the standard three tiers, with one nuance worth getting right: GAF offers TWO distinct Class-4 impact-resistant Timberline lines, not one. The flagship is Timberline HDZ — GAF's most-installed architectural shingle, built on LayerLock layered construction with a wider nailing zone for install accuracy, StainGuard Plus algae protection, and a 130 mph wind warranty with the specified accessories; it is NOT impact-rated. For hail, GAF gives two Class-4 routes that reach the same UL 2218 Class 4 rating by different methods: Timberline AS II (also branded ArmorShield II) uses a proprietary SBS polymer-modified ("rubberized") asphalt whose flexibility absorbs impact, while Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat uses a heavier, thicker high-performance fiberglass mat engineered for impact. Both are current GAF Class-4 products — AS II is the SBS/rubberized route, UHDZ the fiberglass-mat route — and either is the line that may qualify a Texas home for an insurance impact-resistance discount (confirm specifics with your insurance agent; cross-reference D1-002). The designer tier is Grand Sequoia, a heavier wood-shake-look shingle, available in a Class 4 "AS" variant and a reflective "RS" cool-roof variant. Across the line, the enhanced Golden Pledge warranty is unlocked only by a GAF Master Elite certified contractor installing the matched GAF accessory system (cross-reference D7-005 for Master Elite, D9-004 for the enhanced-warranty structure). What to ask on a GAF quote: which exact Timberline you're getting — HDZ is the flagship but is not Class 4; for hail, both Timberline AS II (SBS) and Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat (fiberglass mat) are Class 4 — whether the high-wind 6-nail install is included, and whether the contractor is Master Elite if the Golden Pledge warranty matters to you. Cross-reference D1-009 for the general comparison framework.
